Masjid Jamek

Besides the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur, another mosque located in the city centre here which is very prominent is Masjid Jamek or Jamek Mosque. This is one of the few mosques in the heart of Kuala Lumpur where you will see large groups of Muslims praying particularly on Fridays.

Among Malaysia’s oldest mosques

As a historical landmark, Masjid Jamek is one of the oldest structures in the country where it was built more than one hundred years ago. As a religious building, it still stands majestically as one of the main mosques among Muslims who can be seen here during prayer time throughout the day.

Unique and distinct Islamic architecture

Masjid Jamek has a very distinctive character to it as it was designed using a combination of Islamic, Moorish and Mugal motifs by Arthur Benison Hubbak who was involved in designing the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, another iconic structure as well. Besides that, it has a very unique location which is at the confluence of 2 of the most prominent rivers in Klang Valley which are the Klang and Gombak Rivers respectively.

Opened more than a century ago

Officiated in 1909 by the then Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sir Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah, the mosque opened its doors 2 years after it was completed and was the official mosque in Kuala Lumpur before the title was taken over by the National Mosque after it was built but it continued to be an important house of worship till present day.

Although it is not the official mosque of the federal capital, it is still as prominent as ever mainly because of its location. This is further expounded by the fact that it is located right in front of 2 major train stations of the city.
