What you must expect from your Insurance Agent?

Signing up for an insurance policy is very easy these days. With most companies jumping on to the digital platforms, you can easily buy insurance using a mobile app or through the website. In the past, you could only do so through an insurance agent and that still remains one of the most effective ways to do so.

Conventional but effective

When it comes to investing money, Malaysians would mostly go for the human touch and that is why a lot of Malaysians today prefer to deal with an insurance agent to get a policy. You can ask as many questions as you like and a lot of the processes are taken care of for you. As such, it makes better sense to engage an agent as they can explain everything you need to know about your policy. That said, not everything that comes from an agent is good as there are some that are out to make more money out of you. So, before you head out and talk to any agent you can find, take note of what your agent should do for you.

Be clear about your options

The first thing your agent should do is to explain the various forms of plans that are offered. If you are meeting for the first time, it would be best to explain what you do and what you are looking for. Different people in different professions will have different needs. Insurance policies are designed to cater to these situations. Depending on your lifestyle, the agent should be able to propose a policy that works for you. This is the best time to ask everything you need to know about what you are getting into. Remember that you will be entering into a long-term commitment. If you don’t ask now, it would be too late once the policy is in effect.

Honesty is still the best policy

Your agent will propose a plan or plans to you. It will come with various payment schedules, monthly amounts and duration. At this point, you would expect your agent to be honest. This works both ways. If you expect your agent, to be honest, you have to be too. You should not be concealing any information (especially about your health conditions) so that the agent can churn out a plan that is relevant to you. This is the time where your agent needs to spell out what you are paying for, where your money is going and how will you be covered.

Touchbase and follow-up

After you have signed up with your agent, you would expect to receive follow-up calls or a text message to ensure everything is in order. The agent is always consistent before signing up but if they disappear after that, then you need to evaluate if you need to find another one. They should also respond to your queries as and when you have any. If you wake up in the middle of the night and have a sudden need to clarify certain matters about your policy, you should be able to text your agent and get a response the next morning. This is what they do.
