Being pregnant is an extremely happy and joyful feeling but there certain things that you must be aware of and most importantly to avoid during the course of your pregnancy in order to avoid any complications later. 1. Tobacco and tobacco smoke
If you are a smoker, you will ‘automatically’ stop smoking once you find out you are pregnant. Direct smoke will harm the unborn baby. On top of that, you must ensure that you do not go to places where there are cigarette smoke. Minimize dealing with smokers as well.
2. Avoid Stress
Stress refers to both physical and mental ones. Physical ones will inflict back pain, constipation and even low birth weight on the baby. Mental stress might not have direct implications on your child but its best to avoid them altogether.
3. Pets’ litter boxes
If you have a pet like a dog or a cat, you will need to get someone else to change their litter boxes. Unless it is absolutely necessary, use plastic gloves and protective masks. This will ensure that you do not inhale any germs or bacteria into your body.
4. Avoid Caffeine
This might just be harder to do than stop smoking. Avoid drinking coffee, tea or cola drinks because caffeine is a type of stimulant which will directly harm the baby.
5. Vitamin A supplements
You must not have too much Vitamin A during pregnancy. This is very important because you only need 770mg of this vitamin. This is equivalent to 10,000 IUs of Vitamin A and can usually be found in most type of foods.
6. Over-the-counter medication
Avoid over-the-counter medication where possible. If you are not feeling well or have the flu, see the doctor for medication. Don’t buy medication from the pharmacy and this applies to Panadol as well.
7. Sauna, Jacuzzis and tanning beds
Why is it important to avoid these places? Because of the heat. The last thing you want is to overheat your body. So instead of actually relaxing, you might just be stressing your body and the baby.
8. Pesticides and paint
You would know by now that the first trimester is the most important because it is when the baby’s nervous system is growing and hence you must avoid pesticides and paint as they contain toxic fumes.
9. Raw or uncooked eggs
Proteins are very good for health but avoid uncooked or raw eggs as they might contain salmonella bacteria. This applies to uncooked meat as well.
10. Avoid Alcohol
Any type of alcohol beverages must be avoided at all costs. The alcohol that you consume will be passed through the bloodstream and that will get to the baby. Alcohol can inflict very damaging effects on your baby.
