Heritage of Malaysia
Stadium Merdeka is undisputedly the most iconic stadium in Malaysia having hosted the Independence Day celebrations back in 1957. The stadium was built for that specific purpose when it would have been one of the most advanced structures then. Although it has gone through various makeovers and changes, Stadium Merdeka is no longer used as extensively as it was before.
Home to Events and Concerts
Stadium Merdeka was formerly the home of Malaysian football before that role was taken over by the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. During its heydays, it was the host of all international football events including being the home ground for Selangor FC before Kuala Lumpur FC. Throughout the years, Stadium Merdeka has hosted some of the most renowned acts including the Michael Jackson HISTory tour back in 1996. It was also the ground when Muhammad Ali took on Joe Bugner in 1975.
Today, Stadium Merdeka has been refurbished into its original form with a seating capacity of 20,000 where it continues to host mainly concerts. Among the acts that previously performed here include Eason Chan, Jacky Cheung, Avril Lavigne, Big Bang, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and Metallica.
