Sri Mahamariamman Temple

Located in Jalan Tun H S Lee, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple is one of the most prominent places of worship among Hindus from all walks of life in Malaysia. It is an iconic building which can be seen as you approach Chinatown or Petaling Street located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

One of the oldest Hindu temples

This Hindu temple is known to be one of the oldest buildings in the country which welcomes devotees particularly on important dates of the calendar while there are tourists seen at this landmark on every other days.

History of Sri Mahamariamman Temple

This temple was created by K Thamboosamy Pillai which was built in 1873, which means it is almost 150 years old. Besides being the oldest, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple is known to be one of the richest as well. It was originally used by the Pillai family as a private shrine before it was opened to the public in the 1920s.

Unique South Indian architecture design

This temple was built using South Indian style where it has already gone through several renovations and makeovers to what it is today. The tallest structure here is the 5-tiered gopuram or the tower which is decorated with Hindu Gods.

Still as prominent as ever

Today, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple remains as one of the most important landmarks in the tourism industry of Malaysia, most particularly of Kuala Lumpur as tourists and visitors are seen entering the temple along Jalan Tun H S Lee.

Besides being a prominent temple of Hindu devotees, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple is a common tourist attraction where visitors come here each day. Furthermore, it is just a stone’s throw away from Petaling Street where they can shop for all types of goods and souvenirs.
