Banned chemicals in so-called organic beauty products

Many people are not aware that your skin is actually the biggest organ in your body. Thousands of pores are found across your body and they are possible entry points into your system. Hence, what you apply on your skin is very crucial.

No compromise on skin products

In a recent study, it was found that there were some banned chemicals that were used as ingredients for skincare products. The more startling finding was that these products claimed to be ‘organic’.

Organic with risky ingredients

In the study, over 5,000 beauty products were supposedly ‘organic’ but when researched were found to have ingredients that were risky or even dangerous. This was done through a test where:

  • a scale of 1 to 10 was applied. 1 being the best and 10 being the worst
  • the scale was used to evaluate the safety of the ingredient
  • a wide range of products were tested
  • more than 250 of these products which claimed to be ‘organic’ scored 5 or higher

Why is this happening?

Unlike organic food, beauty products do not have a standard method of labelling. In fact, organic food labels are easy to read and understand. Sadly, the same cannot be said about beauty products.
In fact, there is no clear way to say what ‘organic’ means in this sector. This has caught many consumers by surprise.

All up to marketing

Because of this, brands have become more creative in how they label and market their products. So when you see a beauty product which is ‘100% Natural’, it might not necessarily mean that it is fully organically produced. Among the terms that are not regulated in the production of beauty products are:

  • eco-friendly
  • Vegan
  • 100% organic
  • Unscented

So buy cautiously.
